Be Kind Rewind - Sneak Peek - Trailer

Posted by admin on Jan-31-2009

From the fiercely imaginative mind of Academy Award®-winning writer/director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) comes Be Kind Rewind, a tale of two childhood friends who inadvertently get caught up in a scheme to rewrite film history and, in turn, save their beloved video store from extinction. What results is a heartwarming story featuring a sharp-tongued elderly woman who befriends her chauffeur, an investigation by a team of spectral analysts hunting down ghosts in New York, a heart-pounding adventure about a Hong Kong detective and his foul-mouthed partner, a coming of age story set in South Central Los Angeles, and a genetically re-engineered cop fighting criminals…all rolled into one.

Jerry (Jack Black) and Mike (Mos Def) are childhood friends living in Passaic, New Jersey, trying to make ends meet. Jerry is the neighborhood mechanic and lives in a trailer near the power plant which he swears is slowly killing him with its “microwaves.” Across the street, Mike lives and works in the local video rental store, “Be Kind Rewind,” struggling to keep the ailing business owned by his boss, Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover) financially afloat and, physically, in one piece. Mr. Fletcher stubbornly refuses to modernize his store to the standards of the local chain DVD rental stores nearby.

According to Mr. Fletcher, the worn-down video store was also once home to Jazz legend, Fats Waller, who reportedly was born in the tiny location long before video tapes had been invented. Mr. Fletcher, a lifelong devotee to all things Fats Waller, decides to make the trip to commemorate Fats’ death, leaving Mike in charge of keeping the store in order, which means keeping the accident-prone Jerry away from the shop.

Later that day, Jerry decides the time has come to once and for all sabotage the town’s power plant, but he accidentally gets caught in an electromagnetic field. Jerry returns to the store the next morning, confused and disoriented, and begins wandering the aisles of the video store. Unknowingly, his magnetized brain erases every videotape in the store, forcing Mike and Jerry to concoct a plan to start “remaking” — or “swedeing” — all the erased films the townspeople want to rent in an effort for Mr. Fletcher to never find out.

Using a few hastily-made props and a video camera from the store, the duo start by creating their own version of Ghostbusters for their loyal customer, Miss Falewicz (Mia Farrow), who has never seen the film. The result is a complete and utter mess, but the ragtag filmmakers soon realize that in order for their ruse to work, they have to start remaking as many films as they can to keep their customers happy.

Realizing they will need help with their filmmaking efforts, Mike and Jerry enlist a worker at the local cleaners, Alma (Melonie Diaz), to help them in their quest. Using a few inventive camera tricks and some “special effects,” they’re movies become instant town classics. Surprisingly, word of mouth spreads about their hilarious “remakes” and the films become huge hits. Everyone starts coming in to request their favorite films to be remade. As the demand for their tapes booms, so does the size of their crew. Other people in the neighborhood start chipping in to re-envision various dramas, comedies, action films and even animated classics.

But with Hollywood lawyers at their door and the imminent return of Mr. Fletcher, Mike and Jerry must find a way to continue their creative endeavors and rally their community — and allow a tiny little store with huge aspirations to attempt to continue living.

New Line Cinema presents in association with Partizan Films, A Partizan Films Production, A Film By Michel Gondry — Be Kind Rewind. The film stars Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz, Chandler Parker, Irv Gooch, Arjay Smith, Marcus Carl Franklin, Blake Hightower and Amir Ali Said.

The film is written and directed by Michel Gondry. The producers are Gondry, Julie Fong and Georges Bermann. The executive producers are Toby Emmerich and Guy Stodel and the co-producer is Ann Ruark.

China quake - A Human Tragedy

Posted by admin on Jan-31-2009

China - Modern apartment buildings and schools crumbled, smoothly paved highways buckled and bridges collapsed — their flimsy construction no match for the awesome forces of nature.

As the death toll soars from the powerful earthquake that ravaged central China’s Sichuan province, the scale of the devastation is raising questions about the quality of China’s recent construction boom.

“This building is just a piece of junk,” one newly homeless resident of Dujiangyan yelled Wednesday, her body quivering with rage. Her family salvaged clothing and mementos from their wrecked apartment, built when their older home was razed 10 years ago.

“The government tricked us. It told us this building was well constructed. But look at the homes all around us, they’re still standing,” said the woman, who would give only her surname, Chen.

Three decades of high-paced growth have remade China, with stunning showcase metropolises like Beijing and Shanghai as well as formerly tiny county towns that are now small cities with office towers and multistory apartment buildings. But as the widespread devastation from Monday’s magnitude-7.9 quake shows, the pell-mell pace has led some builders to cut corners, especially in outlying areas largely populated by the very young and the very old.

“This new economy in China is not going up safely, it’s going up fast, and the two don’t go together,” said Roger Bilham, a professor of geological sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “You look at the buildings that fell and they should not have fallen,” he said. “This is a story that has been repeated throughout the developing nations.”

New buildings in Beijing — like the signature “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium for this August’s Olympics — are built to exacting codes to withstand earthquakes. But “anti-earthquake standards are not as strict in places like Sichuan as in Shanghai,” said Ren Bing, an architectural designer at Hong Kong-based China Construction International Co.

Monday’s temblor flattened smaller towns in the disaster zone like Yingxiu, where 7,700 people were reported to have died according to aerial footage shown on state-run China Central Television. A hilltop view of Beichuan, another hard-hit town, showed entire blocks of apartment buildings that seemingly disintegrated.

In Dujiangyan city, where rescuers saved a woman eight months pregnant who was trapped for 50 hours under a collapsed apartment building, there was little evidence of steel reinforcement bars in the concrete rubble.

Other infrastructure old and new suffered as well. Nearly 400 dams, most of them small, were damaged across Sichuan, the government’s economic planning agency said on its Web site. One of the two bigger ones, Zipingpu, had cracks four inches across its top; and though the government said the dam was safe, its reservoir was drained.

China is jolted by thousands of earthquakes every year, at least several of them major ones that cause significant damage and loss of life. Since the 1976 quake in Tangshan near Beijing killed at least 240,000 people, the communist government has tried to improve building standards.

“China has been taking earthquake safety very seriously in the past 10 to 20 years,” said Susan Tubbesing, head of the California-based Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. “From what I understand, the codes China has adopted in the past 20 years have been good, solid, seismic codes.”

Enforcement, however, varies. The building boom that has underpinned much of the stunning growth has also been an invitation for corruption, with officials and developers colluding. Profit margins are thinner on smaller projects in less prosperous places, encouraging developers to cut corners.

In larger cities like Shanghai, authorities generally enforce regulations. But that isn’t always true in smaller cities. And in rural areas, it’s out of the question, says Andrew Smeall, an associate at Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations in New York.

“The cost of trying to go back and make sure everything is built to code would be prohibitive,” he said.

It wasn’t just newer buildings that collapsed.

Sichuan, like many parts of China, is dotted with factories left over from Maoist policies of building up industries far from the coasts for strategic reasons.

In Hanwang, the town’s mostly older buildings were flattened or severely damaged by the quake. A newer five-story clock tower, its face stopped at 2:27 — the time the earthquake struck — remained eerily intact.

thanks for the comments and ratings

Inspector Chan Ka-Kui has been demoted to highway patrol as the result of his handling of his previous case, which involved the violent arrest of crimelord Chu Tao. The new duty pleases his girlfriend, May, who is glad that her boyfriend is no longer taking difficult cases and has more time to see her.

However, the happy mood changes when Ka-Kui is greeted by Chu Tao and his bespectacled right-hand man John Ko. It seems Chu Tao is terminally ill with only three months left to live, so he’s been released from prison, and while he’s still alive he vows to make life difficult for Ka-Kui. John Ko and some henchmen show up at Ka Kui’s apartment and intimidate him, baiting the policeman to attack. Later, May and her mother are beaten by John Ko and his men. Ka Kui can no longer hold back, and he lashes out against John Ko and his men at a restaurant.

Ashamed of his behavior, Ka-Kui intends to leave the Royal Hong Kong Police Force for good. He plans to take a trip to Bali with May, but while he’s at a travel agency in a shopping mall, some police officers see him and report that the mall is under a bomb threat. Unable to resist the urge to get involved in police work, Ka Kui tells the officers to sound the fire alarm and have the mall cleared, and agrees to take responsibility for the decision. A bomb does indeed explode, and the entire mall is leveled by the blast.

Ka-Kui is praised for his efforts, and he is assigned to solve the case of the bombing. Ka-Kui plants a covert listening device in the mall property company’s office to try and learn more about the bombers. This leads to a suspect who is a deaf-mute and is a fierce martial artist and explosives expert.

The bombing gang, aware that the police are on to them, plan a simultaneous bombing of the property company and the police headquarters. They double their ransom demand to $20 million and kidnap May, luring Ka-Kui into a trap in which he’s strapped with an explosive vest and forced to pick up the extortion money from the property company. However, after handing off the money, Ka-Kui is able to drive his car into a tunnel so that the bomb he’s wearing can’t be activated, and he strips off the vest. He then goes to rescue May, who’s being held in a warehouse full of fireworks. Ka-Kui again faces the deaf-mute man, who throws small firebombs at him. Ka-Kui then gains the upper hand and brutally retaliates against the mute man, finally throwing him off a several-stories-high catwalk onto a pile of plastic drums below.

Ka-Kui then rescues May and departs the warehouse, just as it explodes in a huge ball of fire.
